Narrative:

I was in command of flight. First officer flying, I was working communications. Climbing through FL240 cleared to FL310. Through FL260 we were reclred to FL280. I acknowledged FL280. First officer did not hear the new altitude clearance. I did not realize it due to F/a in cockpit with question about cabin service. Continued climb to 29300', whereupon controller restated FL280 clearance. We descended immediately to FL280. No apparent conflict. The first officer was fairly new. I have been flying medium large transport 15 yrs and usually get extremely competent first officer's. My distraction and familiarity with the aircraft and rtes and my first officer's relative newness contributed to this occurrence.
