Narrative:

Our departure clearance out of atl included instructions to maintain 10000'. On this flight the captain decided to delete the 250 KT restriction from the FMS climb page in order to eliminate the throttle burst associated with the medium large transport X when leveling off at 1000'. He planned to follow the flight director pitch bar up to 300' AGL and then decrease pitch to allow the aircraft to accelerate to 250 KTS. Once at 250 KTS his plan was to maintain this speed up to 10000' by adjusting pitch and ignoring the flight director pitch bar. This technique had proven to give a much smoother level off and acceleration to climb speed. Though the captain had been on the aircraft for some time, this was a relatively new technique for him. Our takeoff had been behind an aircraft and shortly after takeoff we experienced a little turbulence which we assumed was from the preceding widebody transport. The captain decreased pitch to stay out of his wake while both were clearing outside the aircraft in an effort to see the widebody transport. Unable to acquire the aircraft the captain's scan returned to his ADI and he began to follow the pitch bar which led him to accelerate beyond 250 KTS. Aircraft speed was noted and reduction begun. Supplemental information from acn 155518: the aircraft accelerated to climb speed at approximately 320 KTS.

Title: CAPT OF ADVTECH ACR MLG ATTEMPTS TO MANIPULATE AFCS IN NEW MANNER, IS DISTRACTED, AND EXCEEDS 250 KTS BELOW 10000' SPEED LIMIT.

Narrative: OUR DEP CLRNC OUT OF ATL INCLUDED INSTRUCTIONS TO MAINTAIN 10000'. ON THIS FLT THE CAPT DECIDED TO DELETE THE 250 KT RESTRICTION FROM THE FMS CLB PAGE IN ORDER TO ELIMINATE THE THROTTLE BURST ASSOCIATED WITH THE MLG X WHEN LEVELING OFF AT 1000'. HE PLANNED TO FOLLOW THE FLT DIRECTOR PITCH BAR UP TO 300' AGL AND THEN DECREASE PITCH TO ALLOW THE ACFT TO ACCELERATE TO 250 KTS. ONCE AT 250 KTS HIS PLAN WAS TO MAINTAIN THIS SPD UP TO 10000' BY ADJUSTING PITCH AND IGNORING THE FLT DIRECTOR PITCH BAR. THIS TECHNIQUE HAD PROVEN TO GIVE A MUCH SMOOTHER LEVEL OFF AND ACCELERATION TO CLB SPD. THOUGH THE CAPT HAD BEEN ON THE ACFT FOR SOME TIME, THIS WAS A RELATIVELY NEW TECHNIQUE FOR HIM. OUR TKOF HAD BEEN BEHIND AN ACFT AND SHORTLY AFTER TKOF WE EXPERIENCED A LITTLE TURB WHICH WE ASSUMED WAS FROM THE PRECEDING WDB. THE CAPT DECREASED PITCH TO STAY OUT OF HIS WAKE WHILE BOTH WERE CLRING OUTSIDE THE ACFT IN AN EFFORT TO SEE THE WDB. UNABLE TO ACQUIRE THE ACFT THE CAPT'S SCAN RETURNED TO HIS ADI AND HE BEGAN TO FOLLOW THE PITCH BAR WHICH LED HIM TO ACCELERATE BEYOND 250 KTS. ACFT SPD WAS NOTED AND REDUCTION BEGUN. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 155518: THE ACFT ACCELERATED TO CLB SPD AT APPROX 320 KTS.
