Narrative:

I contacted lax ramp control and requested permission to push off [the] gate. Upon receiving push clearance; we proceed with our push. Our tug crew pushed about 25 feet; but then stopped due to conflict with an aircraft pushing off directly across the alley. Our push crew's quick actions averted a tail-to-tail collision on the ramp. I called ramp control and asked about the conflict and [they] stated [they] had canceled our push clearance and given push clearance to company aircraft across the alley. The only problem is that I never heard nor acknowledged the cancellation of our clearance. All ended well today thanks to an alert ground crew. For ramp; seek acknowledgment of all clearances.
