Narrative:

I was on the ramp at ZZZ. Taxi instructions by ground: 'taxi runway xxl via taxiway bravo; hold short november'; which I read back. Taxiway bravo ends at the ramp. I would be taking a right from the ramp onto taxiway bravo. Before exiting the ramp I looked both ways and noted a helicopter approaching to land from my left to my right on the taxiway. Appeared to be not more than 300 feet away and clearly heading towards the spot on the taxiway at which I would be entering (and which I had been cleared to enter). I immediately stopped (still on the ramp) and watched the helicopter settle down on the taxiway and taxi to a parking spot on the ramp. I was then instructed (at least twice) by ground to hold my position after which I was instructed to proceed. My initial instructor had taught me to always check before being cleared onto an active runway to be certain that there wasn't an aircraft on final; and mom was right about looking both ways before crossing a street (or entering a taxiway she might have added).
