Narrative:

While descending to san jose on the razzr 4 RNAV arrival; ATC cleared us for the RNAV rnp Z 12R. I had initially set and briefed the ILS 12R approach into the FMS. As we approached shikk intersection on the arrival I made the change to the RNAV rnp 12R; it formed a discontinuity and we had to go to heading mode while we managed the discontinuity; allowing the aircraft to get off course. We managed to get back on course and the rest of the flight was uneventful. I could have waited to make the changed until we were on a straight course in order to better manage the discontinuity. I could have verified with the captain before I made the approach change.
