Narrative:

PNF (pilot not flying) copied the ATIS information using a different radio while PF (pilot flying) monitored the primary radio with ZZZ approach radar and reported an altimeter setting of 29.99' hg. ATC assigned 2;500 feet MSL for the visual approach to runway xx; PNF set 2;500 feet on the selector and airplane descended to 2;500 feet MSL on autopilot. ATC called and said they were seeing a low altitude alert and asked us to state our altitude. PNF confirmed 2;500 feet and asked for the current altimeter setting at ZZZ. ATC said it was 29.69'. PF started an immediate climb while resetting altimeter to 29.69.'problem was exacerbated by PNF's low time in the airplane; high workload in the terminal area; and being unfamiliar with the local area while trying to visually acquire the airport. In addition; the relatively low altimeter setting (29.69') in perfectly clear weather introduced a 'believability' factor when he was listening to the ATIS broadcast.
