Narrative:
Crew chief came into the lunch room and told me he had a job for me to do. 'It would take me 15 minutes.' he gave me a spline mechanism and told me R3 door. I said 'door? [We need [another technician]'. He said 'don't worry about it; I'm signing it off.' I went to [the aircraft] with the spline mechanism and an illustrated parts catalog picture reference that [he] gave me. I checked the R3 door and found no problem. I checked the L3 door; found no problem. Then [he] comes up on the plane and points to the R3 door spline mechanism. I told him; 'there's nothing wrong with it.' he then tells me 'it's the R2 door.' we go to the R2 door and see that the spline mechanism is broke. [He] gives me paperwork; and says 'looks like one nut; that's it.' I took my wrench; turned the nut about a quarter turn and the slide blew.
