Narrative:

After an uneventful training flight; we returned to base. The student pilot was flying well; but was a little distracted because of a faster plane having entered the pattern. We had to extend downwind and follow a somewhat non-standard profile on base and final. Flare and touchdown were normal; with little wind; but after landing the plane drifted to the right and the student over-corrected to the left; pointing us off the runway. I attempted to correct; but was unable to fully regain control and we exited runway into grass at about 10-20 knots. We stopped in grass and after shutdown we were pushed to the taxiway and continued to parking position. There was no damage to plane; nor any injuries.lesson learned is to be ready for anything in a tailwheel plane throughout the landing roll; and also to clearly communicate with students to relinquish control if the instructor has to take over; to prevent confusion on who is controlling the aircraft.
