Narrative:

While cruising in a cloud layer we suddenly experienced a brief period of moderate turbulence. The aircraft pitched and yawed and climbed several hundred ft during the encounter. One of the F/a's informed us of possible serious injuries in the cabin and the captain requested priority handling. Our color radar was set at the greatest range scale and showed a small area of activity approximately 20 NM to the east of course. If the radar had been set at a smaller range perhaps we would have seen some activity on our course and avoided the turbulence. The injuries in the cabin were confirmed as minor and priority handling was discontinued. Supplemental information from acn 154629: radar was selected in 240 mi range not showing any WX on radar. Suspect rapidly building circuit breaker that would have been detected on 60 mi range. Radar set at 2 1/2 degrees down, 3 clicks down from fixed gain. Landed phl as scheduled. One F/a cracked bone right foot.

Title: WDB ACR ENCOUNTERS SEVERE TURBULENCE DURING FLT ON ATLANTIC OCEANIC ROUTE CAUSING INJURY TO FA.

Narrative: WHILE CRUISING IN A CLOUD LAYER WE SUDDENLY EXPERIENCED A BRIEF PERIOD OF MODERATE TURB. THE ACFT PITCHED AND YAWED AND CLBED SEVERAL HUNDRED FT DURING THE ENCOUNTER. OUR COLOR RADAR WAS SET AT THE GREATEST RANGE SCALE AND SHOWED A SMALL AREA OF ACTIVITY APPROX 20 NM TO THE E OF COURSE. IF THE RADAR HAD BEEN SET AT A SMALLER RANGE PERHAPS WE WOULD HAVE SEEN SOME ACTIVITY ON OUR COURSE AND AVOIDED THE TURB. THE INJURIES IN THE CABIN WERE CONFIRMED AS MINOR AND PRIORITY HANDLING WAS DISCONTINUED. SUPPLEMENTAL INFO FROM ACN 154629: RADAR WAS SELECTED IN 240 MI RANGE NOT SHOWING ANY WX ON RADAR. SUSPECT RAPIDLY BUILDING CB THAT WOULD HAVE BEEN DETECTED ON 60 MI RANGE. RADAR SET AT 2 1/2 DEGS DOWN, 3 CLICKS DOWN FROM FIXED GAIN. LANDED PHL AS SCHEDULED. ONE F/A CRACKED BONE RIGHT FOOT.
