Narrative:

Dispatcher issued flight plan approximately 53 minutes before push back time. At that time; release 1 was current. No attempt to contact crew with addition of an alternate; which changed the release to 2. First officer discovered this when brakes were released for push back and the release number and off times were sent. We discussed the change and I signed for the new release. No attempt by the dispatcher to in-form or coordinate this important change. Then approximately 2.5 hours into the flight; we needed to cross a line of severe thunderstorms to make our way into ord. We sent ATC reroute information to the dispatcher as required; and a minimal copy route reply was all we received back. Fortunately; we were able to use the weather app to help us decide best course of action to avoid the weather. If we did not have this feature then I would have been proactive with the dispatcher for more information. I contacted the dispatch supervisor on duty after landing; and he agreed this was unacceptable and should never happen; and he suggested we file a report; which makes good sense.
