Narrative:

On departure; first officer (first officer) hand flying out of 11000 feet. Initially we experienced a power loss followed by a surge. I pulled #1 throttle toward idle then engine made some vibration; popped and quit. I had first officer continue flying and work the radios. I had first officer [contact ATC] and I accomplished engine fire severe damage qrc checklist. EICAS N1 showed nothing. I do recall some very low N2 indication. Oil pressure was red but I cannot recall the number if any. Secondary engine instruments did not come on automatically. Looked like an engine seizure to us. I briefly considered a restart but decided it was safer to just continue single engine. Contacted dispatch and asked to get [maintenance control] on the line; don't know if they were ever there or not. Described the event to dispatch and he asked if we were returning...and I said yes. He said he would get everything ready for us. Briefed fas (flight attendants) and told them we had an engine failure and would be returning for a normal landing. Made an announcement to passengers and basically said the same thing. Finished checklist; setup for approach; and briefed. I took control of the aircraft and first officer did the overweight checklist as well as the nonstandard landing performance. Uneventful single engine landing.
