Narrative:

Issued clearance to osh maintaining heading of 090 degrees. Heard call sign, thought I was cleared direct to bae. I then asked to repeat clearance. The controller said direct bae. I replied, 'going direct bae 3000' twice, but no reply. A different controller then came on frequency about 1 min later, and told me that I was not cleared direct bae, make immediate turn to 150 degrees. He then proceeded to give me a lecture about doing things west/O a clearance. My feelings are that may be I did not receive a clearance to go direct, but I replied twice about it and received no answer. I am a low time INS pilot. I have a hard enough time flying aircraft in IMC. Maybe I made a mistake, maybe they did. But I don't think a congested frequency is the time or place for a lecture. This could be settled after landing over the phone. I personally think the controller wasted too much air time giving me a lecture.
