Narrative:

After departing cancun; the flight attendants called to advise us of a burning odor coming from somewhere near the aft lavatory. They reported no smoke; but a strong electrical odor. We began running the smoke; fire; fumes checklist in the QRH. Periodically; the procedure had us stop and wait to see if the fumes increased or decreased. Each time the flight attendant (flight attendant) reported the odor seemed to be getting stronger. We ultimately reached the point in the procedure where a divert to the nearest field was directed. We [advised ATC]; began the divert to an alternate airport; ran the diversion checklist in the quick reference guide and landed uneventfully.
