Narrative:

We received multiple ATC reroute requests/suggestions offered with direct routing. These suggestions were 'forceful' and very 'pushy.' only because there was weather offshore we did not immediately accept the direct routing. After initially asking for flight plan route; ATC tried again several times to give us more direct routing. After checking the weather; we looked at the international flight operation manual (ifom) caribbean region and we chose to plot our 162 NM restriction. Sure enough; we would've busted it with ATC's suggestions. We declared 'unable' and were given more westerly routing. As soon as we passed the western apex of the 162 NM range area; and without us asking; ATC cleared us direct [fix] and then to destination. They more than led us down the primrose path here. I'd like to strongly suggest this is highlighted in the international SOP pages for the caribbean because ATC could not have cared less about it.
