Narrative:

After takeoff I selected the gear up. The three green gear lights went out; but the red gear unsafe light remained illuminated and we heard a thumping noise every couple of seconds. After switching to departure; I explained that we had a gear issue and requested vectors to an area where we could sort out the problem. Before pulling out the QRH to run the appropriate checklist; I lowered the gear and we had three green gear lights and the red gear light extinguished. I then tried the gear one more time; and had the same result with the red unsafe light and thumping noise. I lowered the gear again; confirmed the green lights; and we proceeded to land without further incident. After landing; I contacted [dispatch] to advise them that we had returned to our departure airport for this empty leg; and they then transferred me to maintenance control.I should have referred to the QRH immediately; as it has a note in the checklist to not retract the gear. In retrospect; I think I was trying to do too many things at once; and I needed to slow things down and refer to the checklist first.
