Narrative:
On initial climb out; we received an EICAS warning message fuel imbalance. The fuel gauge right tank red reading was 0 lbs. Total also red reading same as left tank. I leveled at 2000 feet and ran the checklist for fuel imbalance which lead to suspected leak checklist. I found no remedy in either; so opted to stay in the pattern and return to the airport. There were no fuel low level or abnormal engine indications. I notified company; flight attendants and passengers and landed normally. The aircraft was not overweight. An undesired aircraft state of some mechanical malfunction led to false 0 lbs indication in right fuel tank.
