Narrative:

ATC cleared us to descend to FL220. Approaching FL224 center told us to turn right to a heading of 090 degrees and climb to FL230. We complied as instructed. We saw the traffic pass well off to our left and below us. Estimated distance of 2-3 mi. No further problems. Suspect ATC had cleared both aircraft through conflicting altitudes on same heading. Controller realized conflict and corrected immediately. Good head work on his part.
