Narrative:
This problem arose because of inexperience with operations at airports with control towers and unfamiliarity with taxiway layouts at rockford airport. I received clearance from ground to taxi to runway 36 for departure and given the departure frequency, I (apparently) turned the radio to the departure frequency after asking for and receiving a confirmation from ground on that frequency number. Upon taxiing, I followed the 18/36 runway markers but missed the first exit taxiway to 18/36 and continued to the second. ATC said they told me to hold before crossing runway 30 (an intersecting runway) but I did not hear them so I proceeded after making sure everything was clear. I did stop to let other traffic on the first taxiway to 18/36 proceed, then followed after them. Holding short at runway 36, I received word from ATC (I think after I called in on the departure frequency) that I had xed an active runway. They asked for my phone number and a date on which they could call me to discuss the situation. I was on my way to osh kosh, so I told them to call thursday. To this date, I have not received their call. I waited at home all day thursday and friday for it. I intend to review radio procedures at controled airports with my instrument to make sure my future performance is correct in every respect. If I made an error, it was due to my inexperience (I have been flying 2 yrs) and I want to do the best I can. Any mistake I made was not intentional.
Original NASA ASRS Text
Title: INEXPERIENCED PLT TAXIS ACROSS ACTIVE RWY AT TFD WITHOUT PERMISSION.
Narrative: THIS PROB AROSE BECAUSE OF INEXPERIENCE WITH OPS AT ARPTS WITH CTL TWRS AND UNFAMILIARITY WITH TXWY LAYOUTS AT ROCKFORD ARPT. I RECEIVED CLRNC FROM GND TO TAXI TO RWY 36 FOR DEP AND GIVEN THE DEP FREQ, I (APPARENTLY) TURNED THE RADIO TO THE DEP FREQ AFTER ASKING FOR AND RECEIVING A CONFIRMATION FROM GND ON THAT FREQ NUMBER. UPON TAXIING, I FOLLOWED THE 18/36 RWY MARKERS BUT MISSED THE FIRST EXIT TXWY TO 18/36 AND CONTINUED TO THE SECOND. ATC SAID THEY TOLD ME TO HOLD BEFORE XING RWY 30 (AN INTERSECTING RWY) BUT I DID NOT HEAR THEM SO I PROCEEDED AFTER MAKING SURE EVERYTHING WAS CLR. I DID STOP TO LET OTHER TFC ON THE FIRST TXWY TO 18/36 PROCEED, THEN FOLLOWED AFTER THEM. HOLDING SHORT AT RWY 36, I RECEIVED WORD FROM ATC (I THINK AFTER I CALLED IN ON THE DEP FREQ) THAT I HAD XED AN ACTIVE RWY. I INTEND TO REVIEW RADIO PROCS AT CTLED ARPTS WITH MY INSTR TO MAKE SURE MY FUTURE PERFORMANCE IS CORRECT IN EVERY RESPECT. IF I MADE AN ERROR, IT WAS DUE TO MY INEXPERIENCE (I HAVE BEEN FLYING 2 YRS) AND I WANT TO DO THE BEST I CAN. ANY MISTAKE I MADE WAS NOT INTENTIONAL.
