Narrative:
During cruise at FL330, ord-bwi, west of the dryer VOR, the left engine fire detection a loop light illuminated. The abnormal procedure for a fire detector loop light was accomplished. This resulted in a full fire indication with fire pull handle light illuminated and bell. Accomplished engine fire/severe damage/sep checklist, and all appropriate abnormals. Declared an emergency. Diverted to cle, the nearest suitable airport in point of time. The company was advised. After landing in cle, I ascertained from the airport fire fighting authorities that the aircraft was not on fire, nor was there evidence of there having been a fire. I taxied to the gate and deplaned passenger normally. I made an appropriate aircraft maintenance log book entry.
