Narrative:

Accidental misinterp of taxi clearance to runway 33 det. We'd departed from the intersection past inactive runway 7-25 in the past, and seeing that we were the only aircraft around, did not believe it to be a problem. After being given clearance to taxi to runway 33, we did just that. The controller began talking. Not hearing our call sign gave a different clearance which we believed was for ground veh. The flight was a training flight and I think the situation could have been avoided if the controller idented us earlier and I concentrated more instead of giving dual to the student. Nothing was said about the taxi but feel that the controller could have stopped the action instead of letting it continue. Callback conversation with reporter revealed the following: reporter clarified the circumstances of the incident by describing that he was taxiing out from the GA ramp ese of the runway 33 approach end. In his previous experiences at det, he had always been cleared to taxi to runway 33 at the intersection with taxiway I, so he left the GA ramp, taxied across runway 7/25 which was closed, and turned left on india to hold short of runway 33. What the controller actually intended was of the aircraft to taxi toward the left of the GA ramp for takeoff from the very end of 33. Controller apparently tried to redirect flight as it began taxiing from the ramp, but controller either did not use or reporter did not hear his call sign. As a result the reporter assumed that the controller was talking to a ground veh driver in the vicinity of the runway 33 approach end. There were no traffic conflicts that resulted from the misunderstanding.

Title: INSTRUCTOR PLT AND STUDENT FLYING AN SMA COMPLEX TAXIED OUT FROM THE GA TERMINAL AT DET AND PROCEEDED TO INTERSECTION I AT RWY 33 INSTEAD OF TAXIING TO THE APCH END OF THE RWY.

Narrative: ACCIDENTAL MISINTERP OF TAXI CLRNC TO RWY 33 DET. WE'D DEPARTED FROM THE INTXN PAST INACTIVE RWY 7-25 IN THE PAST, AND SEEING THAT WE WERE THE ONLY ACFT AROUND, DID NOT BELIEVE IT TO BE A PROB. AFTER BEING GIVEN CLRNC TO TAXI TO RWY 33, WE DID JUST THAT. THE CTLR BEGAN TALKING. NOT HEARING OUR CALL SIGN GAVE A DIFFERENT CLRNC WHICH WE BELIEVED WAS FOR GND VEH. THE FLT WAS A TRNING FLT AND I THINK THE SITUATION COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED IF THE CTLR IDENTED US EARLIER AND I CONCENTRATED MORE INSTEAD OF GIVING DUAL TO THE STUDENT. NOTHING WAS SAID ABOUT THE TAXI BUT FEEL THAT THE CTLR COULD HAVE STOPPED THE ACTION INSTEAD OF LETTING IT CONTINUE. CALLBACK CONVERSATION WITH RPTR REVEALED THE FOLLOWING: RPTR CLARIFIED THE CIRCUMSTANCES OF THE INCIDENT BY DESCRIBING THAT HE WAS TAXIING OUT FROM THE GA RAMP ESE OF THE RWY 33 APCH END. IN HIS PREVIOUS EXPERIENCES AT DET, HE HAD ALWAYS BEEN CLRED TO TAXI TO RWY 33 AT THE INTXN WITH TXWY I, SO HE LEFT THE GA RAMP, TAXIED ACROSS RWY 7/25 WHICH WAS CLOSED, AND TURNED LEFT ON INDIA TO HOLD SHORT OF RWY 33. WHAT THE CTLR ACTUALLY INTENDED WAS OF THE ACFT TO TAXI TOWARD THE LEFT OF THE GA RAMP FOR TKOF FROM THE VERY END OF 33. CTLR APPARENTLY TRIED TO REDIRECT FLT AS IT BEGAN TAXIING FROM THE RAMP, BUT CTLR EITHER DID NOT USE OR RPTR DID NOT HEAR HIS CALL SIGN. AS A RESULT THE RPTR ASSUMED THAT THE CTLR WAS TALKING TO A GND VEH DRIVER IN THE VICINITY OF THE RWY 33 APCH END. THERE WERE NO TFC CONFLICTS THAT RESULTED FROM THE MISUNDERSTANDING.
