Narrative:

Departed atl for jackson, mi. Under the control of ZTL at approximately pm det, approximately 30 mi southeast of birmingham, in intermediate level off was given at FL190 due to traffic at FL200. We leveled our aircraft at FL190 with the autoplt on altitude hold. We allowed the aircraft to accelerate to about 360 KIAS when the 'stabilizer out of trim' light illuminated. The first officer, flying the large transport, disengaged the autoplt. The aircraft violently pitched up gaining approximately 300' before the first officer could push the nose over to return to FL190. The autoplt was switched from 'a' mode to 'B' mode, reengaged, and operated normally for the remainder of the flight. Even though the first officer had a secure hold on the yoke and anticipated a pitch up, it was stronger than he could immediately control.

Title: FLT CREW HAS STABILIZER EQUIPMENT PROBLEM. DISENGAGED AUTOPLT, VIOLENT PITCH UP, ALT DEVIATION.

Narrative: DEPARTED ATL FOR JACKSON, MI. UNDER THE CTL OF ZTL AT APPROX PM DET, APPROX 30 MI SE OF BIRMINGHAM, IN INTERMEDIATE LEVEL OFF WAS GIVEN AT FL190 DUE TO TFC AT FL200. WE LEVELED OUR ACFT AT FL190 WITH THE AUTOPLT ON ALT HOLD. WE ALLOWED THE ACFT TO ACCELERATE TO ABOUT 360 KIAS WHEN THE 'STAB OUT OF TRIM' LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE F/O, FLYING THE LGT, DISENGAGED THE AUTOPLT. THE ACFT VIOLENTLY PITCHED UP GAINING APPROX 300' BEFORE THE F/O COULD PUSH THE NOSE OVER TO RETURN TO FL190. THE AUTOPLT WAS SWITCHED FROM 'A' MODE TO 'B' MODE, REENGAGED, AND OPERATED NORMALLY FOR THE REMAINDER OF THE FLT. EVEN THOUGH THE F/O HAD A SECURE HOLD ON THE YOKE AND ANTICIPATED A PITCH UP, IT WAS STRONGER THAN HE COULD IMMEDIATELY CTL.
