Narrative:

We pushed on time; but were given a 45 minute delay initially due to reports of severe turbulence. We waited on the ground then returned to the gate per dispatch request. After time passed; we pushed and were told turbulence was dying down and things were smoothing out. It was a long day. We were approaching duty limits for the day. Flight was uneventful until approaching las. After misen; we were told expect runway 26L. As we got closer ATC said winds were 170/13 variable 200. Reports were no more than moderate. We were then told after sunst descend 5500'. The tailwind was 66 knots and the aircraft soon encountered severe turbulence. The pilot flying (PF) disengaged autopilot and leveled off. ATC directed a turn of 340 descend 5500'; however; the aircraft wasn't slowing so we put flaps; gear; and pilot monitoring (pm) put out speedbrakes. We were coming out of turbulence and felt ok at the time. As we approached the turn to final; we encountered turbulence which lead to decreased crew coordination; which lead to a lower than safe altitude in the window. FAF was extended despite being further out. As the aircraft descended we encountered turbulence and windshear with a sink; which then activated the ground proximity warning system (GPWS) warning 'terrain pull up'. We executed terrain escape maneuver and were out of the turbulence. The aircraft then handled fine; and we were able to land safely.
