Narrative:
Fuel automatic feed fault illuminated inflight and ECAM action was taken to pump fuel out of the center tank. The ECAM non-normal supplemental manual directed us to turn the center tank pumps off when 'lo lvl' annunciated in the center tank. The problem returned; however; as the center tank improperly continued to re-fill from the wing tank(s). The center tank was emptied per ECAM action item 3 times successfully; each time the ECAM recurred (ie. The center tank improperly filled to 550 lb with either wing tank < 11;000 lb). Consideration was given to what would happen if the center tank pumps stopped emptying the 14;500 pound capacity center tank. A diversion was deemed the safe and appropriate response to the malfunctioning fuel system.
