Narrative:

We took off out of salt lake international on runway 35. Tower initially cleared us for a northeast bound departure and cleared us to 5500 feet. As we were climbing out tower came back; said that there was traffic in the bountiful traffic pattern; and cleared us to 6000 feet. We had the traffic on our screen with the ads-B but there was no tail number associated with the target. I kept an eye on the screen watching the traffic and I had my student looking for the traffic outside as we climbed out. Tower then said that the traffic was heading straight at us and their altitude was around 5200-5500. At this point; we were almost at 6000 feet; and just about to cross over interstate-15. We were still in bravo when the aircraft passed right below us making no radio calls and not cleared into bravo. They continued south and we went north. Tower asked if it was an airplane that passed underneath us and we confirmed that it was. It looked like a cessna 172.
