Narrative:

On a 5nm left downwind approach gave us a descent to 3600 ft which was the MSA for the area; called the field in sight got cleared for a visual approach to runway 2 in cha then set 2500 ft in the altitude preselect with a 500 fpm descent; looked outside to notice ground was coming up and reduced the descent rate to 300 fpm at 3000 ft got the egpws terrain warning; clicked off the ap (auto pilot) pitched up and 100 ft in the climb the warning went away. Should have stayed at 3600ft until base turn and went down to 3000 ft with mountains in the area and got the terrain warning.[I] will not descend below the MSA with mountainous terrain until being 100% positive that we are clear of terrain. Next time will monitor the terrain on the mfd and pay closer attention to the MSA at night and even day. These items will be included during the arrival brief portion of the flight and be aware of the night illusions with terrain.
