Narrative:

Upon entering the runway for takeoff; the crew confirmed compass heading position and captain re-adjusted rudder pedals in order to have full comfortable control of steering being the runway was contaminated. Upon doing so; unknowingly and accidentally a switch was moved (probably by the knee) that placed the gyros to an inertial reference system (IRS) feed however the IRS was not turned on (IRS used only for long overwater navigation and was not required). The actual light for the IRS did not turn on so captain did not notice the compass feed was changed. Upon departure; we were confronted with no directional heading on the HSI compass of either side. After trying to determine why the problem we eventually noticed the IRS to have been selected for heading by basically switching switches to try to determine why we were having this problem. The light bulb was bad and was replaced at destination. ATC was very helpful in giving us time to fix our issue. We did not come close to any other aircraft in the process of this situation nor did we lose control of the aircraft. At all times; we had magnetic compass but initially we were a bit confused as to our position due to the wrong information we were looking at on the HSI.
