Narrative:

Stable at FL360; suddenly TCAS RA announced 'climb; climb.' no TA prewarning. Performed SOP (disconnect autopilot; called flight directors off; and smoothly but positively initiated climb). First officer notified ATC who then replied they didn't have traffic near us. Requested and stabilized at FL370. RA red square displayed under our position showing -10 and following us laterally. After a few minutes; reset TCAS stby then TA/RA. Red RA disappeared. Confirmed again with ATC of no traffic and got cleared back to FL360. Communicated to dispatch and maintenance control and wrote discrepancy in aircraft maintenance logbook. Possible malfunction of TCAS; erroneous indication.
