On climbout; passing through a layer of clouds; we took a direct [laser beam] hit to the cockpit. I caught a direct hit to my right eye for one second. [I experienced a] slight tingle to the right eye; but no vision loss or distortion. Prior to departure; we briefed a possible green laser event as a threat. ATC [was] advised at the time; of the event.
