Narrative:

Distracted while and even before entering the pattern. Was unfamiliar with the idented fix. When I did identify, there was a plane at my 9 O'clock position that caught my attention. I was unclr about the intentions of the plane as I had already idented the #1 aircraft on downwind I was to follow. As I was about to call the tower, the other plane turned base. I then extended downwind, turned base, then final. I was concerned that the plane on final would not clear in time, but it did. The first thing I knew something was wrong was the scraping of metal. Contributing factors include having allowed myself to become distraction, not calling up to check on the specific fix in question. In addition, I have been renting a variety of planes, fixed and retract. With few hours in this plane even though I had a chkout, I was not yet comfortable. Also, a minor comment, the gear retract knob is in size and appearance on this aircraft, almost an after thought. While it is clearly my responsibility to identify the fixes and other aircraft, perhaps more work needs to be done when blending traffic. Also, there is supposed to be a warning horn for the gear. The horn did not sound, yet the plane had an annual just 2 or 3 months previously, and I question whether the horn is part of the inspection when the gear is checked.

Title: GA SMA GEAR UP LNDG AT AN ARPT NEAR DEN.

Narrative: DISTRACTED WHILE AND EVEN BEFORE ENTERING THE PATTERN. WAS UNFAMILIAR WITH THE IDENTED FIX. WHEN I DID IDENT, THERE WAS A PLANE AT MY 9 O'CLOCK POS THAT CAUGHT MY ATTN. I WAS UNCLR ABOUT THE INTENTIONS OF THE PLANE AS I HAD ALREADY IDENTED THE #1 ACFT ON DOWNWIND I WAS TO FOLLOW. AS I WAS ABOUT TO CALL THE TWR, THE OTHER PLANE TURNED BASE. I THEN EXTENDED DOWNWIND, TURNED BASE, THEN FINAL. I WAS CONCERNED THAT THE PLANE ON FINAL WOULD NOT CLR IN TIME, BUT IT DID. THE FIRST THING I KNEW SOMETHING WAS WRONG WAS THE SCRAPING OF METAL. CONTRIBUTING FACTORS INCLUDE HAVING ALLOWED MYSELF TO BECOME DISTR, NOT CALLING UP TO CHK ON THE SPECIFIC FIX IN QUESTION. IN ADDITION, I HAVE BEEN RENTING A VARIETY OF PLANES, FIXED AND RETRACT. WITH FEW HRS IN THIS PLANE EVEN THOUGH I HAD A CHKOUT, I WAS NOT YET COMFORTABLE. ALSO, A MINOR COMMENT, THE GEAR RETRACT KNOB IS IN SIZE AND APPEARANCE ON THIS ACFT, ALMOST AN AFTER THOUGHT. WHILE IT IS CLRLY MY RESPONSIBILITY TO IDENT THE FIXES AND OTHER ACFT, PERHAPS MORE WORK NEEDS TO BE DONE WHEN BLENDING TFC. ALSO, THERE IS SUPPOSED TO BE A WARNING HORN FOR THE GEAR. THE HORN DID NOT SOUND, YET THE PLANE HAD AN ANNUAL JUST 2 OR 3 MONTHS PREVIOUSLY, AND I QUESTION WHETHER THE HORN IS PART OF THE INSPECTION WHEN THE GEAR IS CHKED.
