Narrative:

On taxi out the taxi before takeoff checklist was read, 3 1/2 degree anu stabilizer trim verified by both pilots and a confign check accomplished as per checklist. On takeoff roll at approximately 80 KTS, a stabilizer and master warning followed by a confign warning appeared and sounded. The takeoff was aborted following prescribed procedures, I could hear the senior F/a yelling on the PA for the passengers to brace and put their heads down. At approximately 30 KTS of airspeed with the aircraft well under control I directed the first officer to contact the tower and I made a PA announcement to reassure the passengers. After we stopped, we exited the runway and asked for a place to stop and check the situation over. We noticed that the trim now read zero degree. During the decision to abort I remember thinking we had a runway trim problem and started to put in nose down trim but elected to abort rather than attempt to correct the problem and continue. We returned to the gate and requested maintenance and made a logbook entry. Maintenance found a short on the confign warning module of the aircraft.

DURING THE DECISION TO ABORT I REMEMBER THINKING WE HAD A RWY TRIM PROB AND STARTED TO PUT IN NOSE DOWN TRIM BUT ELECTED TO ABORT RATHER THAN ATTEMPT TO CORRECT THE PROB AND CONTINUE. WE RETURNED TO THE GATE AND REQUESTED MAINT AND MADE A LOGBOOK ENTRY. MAINT FOUND A SHORT ON THE CONFIGN WARNING MODULE OF THE ACFT.
