Narrative:

On climb out at ind, inboard flaps briefly indicated asymmetric, then froze at 4 degrees symmetrical, followed checklist. Inboard flaps still indicated 4 degrees. Discussed problem with dispatch and duty officer and agreed to proceed to mci at 210 KTS at FL200. Shortly thereafter, inboard flaps retracted. As a precautionary measure, landing was made with outboard flaps only, and an emergency was declared to eliminate a possibility of a go around. Emergency equipment standing by at mci. An uneventful landing was made at mci. Maintenance log for the aircraft reported the temporary split flap indication after takeoff and we also spoke with our maintenance about it.
