Narrative:

Flight from teb to mdw, IFR slot required for mdw. Mine was for XXXX. We left teb after XXXX. We would not make arrival time due to employer requirements. West of fwa and below FL180, knowing we were out of IFR slot time, we cancelled IFR, left center frequency and contacted mdw VFR frequency with appropriate information. We passed abeam gyy with appropriate contact. On landing we were told that we had not complied with FAA requirements. As I had cancelled IFR outside of chicago approach airspace and continued VFR, I believed we were correct.
