Narrative:

On landing at lns the aircraft's altitude preselect windows was giving erroneous warnings. On contacting maintenance they said it was ok per MEL. In my opinion, the MEL was wrong or there was a typing error. It said, '# of units installed-1, # required for flight-1.' subsequent notes: 'before deactivation see aircraft flight manual for operation and procedures.' there were no procedures in aircraft flight manual, so this was strange. Also, after deactivation aircraft must be placarded by maintenance. Maintenance said the normal maintenance placard for write-ups was sufficient; I disagree. The bad part of the MEL (part 3) says that if the system (GPWS) fails, you can fly aircraft as many legs as you want. My opinion is that parts 1 and 2 must be complied with before you can use part 3.

Title: MDT PIC REPORTS CONFLICTING INTERP OF MINIMUM EQUIPMENT LIST REGARDING ACFT EQUIPMENT PROBLEM.

Narrative: ON LNDG AT LNS THE ACFT'S ALT PRESELECT WINDOWS WAS GIVING ERRONEOUS WARNINGS. ON CONTACTING MAINT THEY SAID IT WAS OK PER MEL. IN MY OPINION, THE MEL WAS WRONG OR THERE WAS A TYPING ERROR. IT SAID, '# OF UNITS INSTALLED-1, # REQUIRED FOR FLT-1.' SUBSEQUENT NOTES: 'BEFORE DEACTIVATION SEE ACFT FLT MANUAL FOR OPERATION AND PROCS.' THERE WERE NO PROCS IN ACFT FLT MANUAL, SO THIS WAS STRANGE. ALSO, AFTER DEACTIVATION ACFT MUST BE PLACARDED BY MAINT. MAINT SAID THE NORMAL MAINT PLACARD FOR WRITE-UPS WAS SUFFICIENT; I DISAGREE. THE BAD PART OF THE MEL (PART 3) SAYS THAT IF THE SYS (GPWS) FAILS, YOU CAN FLY ACFT AS MANY LEGS AS YOU WANT. MY OPINION IS THAT PARTS 1 AND 2 MUST BE COMPLIED WITH BEFORE YOU CAN USE PART 3.
