Narrative:

Clt departure on heading. Clt departure controller asked if we saw an large transport ahead of us. We said 'yes'. Clt departure said 'you will be following that aircraft. Keep him in sight and follow him normal'. Given heading to intercept clt 189 degree right and switched to atl center. We climbed to 12000' and accelerated up to normal speed of 310 KTS. Atl came back and asked speed. We told him. Atl said, 'we had a speed restriction of 250 KTS until ok'ed by ATC'. We said 'we thought we were doing airspeed normally'. Atl slowed us to 280 KTS then later normal speed. When clt departure said 'normal' that does not mean 'speed normal'. Again ATC communication.

Narrative: CLT DEP ON HDG. CLT DEP CTLR ASKED IF WE SAW AN LGT AHEAD OF US. WE SAID 'YES'. CLT DEP SAID 'YOU WILL BE FOLLOWING THAT ACFT. KEEP HIM IN SIGHT AND FOLLOW HIM NORMAL'. GIVEN HDG TO INTERCEPT CLT 189 DEG R AND SWITCHED TO ATL CTR. WE CLBED TO 12000' AND ACCELERATED UP TO NORMAL SPD OF 310 KTS. ATL CAME BACK AND ASKED SPD. WE TOLD HIM. ATL SAID, 'WE HAD A SPD RESTRICTION OF 250 KTS UNTIL OK'ED BY ATC'. WE SAID 'WE THOUGHT WE WERE DOING AIRSPD NORMALLY'. ATL SLOWED US TO 280 KTS THEN LATER NORMAL SPD.
