Narrative:

After takeoff and at approximately 1000' AGL, #3 engine failed. We continued acceleration and raised flaps to 0. First officer was flying. The first officer moved the #3 thrust lever to idle and #3 start switch to cut-off as I monitored. We attempted a starter assisted start after determining all parameters were suitable, but no luck. We tried two additional windmill starts, one at 260 KTS/6000', and one at 300 KTS/12000'. In each case there was no fuel flow during start attempts. Second the engine as per SOP talked to dispatch to determine where they wanted the aircraft, they requested us to divert to sdf. WX at sdf was clear 7 71/56 0000 30.12, received new clearance to divert to sdf with an alternate of ind. WX was good both places. I felt it was equally as safe to go to sdf as to return to phl (flight time was about 1 plus 10 remaining at that point). It was necessary to dump fuel prior to landing due to approximately 25000 pounds over maximum landing weight, ZID requested we dump at approximately 70 DME northeast of the iiu VOR on 060 degree right at FL190. We dumped down to maximum landing weight and proceeded to uneventful landing. Note: you may be wondering why I am filing this report as nothing particularly unusual occurred. The local FAA office called our chief pilot office and requested that FAA form 8020-5 (aircraft incident report) be submitted. Therefore I have elected to submit this report.

Title: ACR WDB FRT ENGINE FAILURE AND SHUT DOWN DURING CLIMB OUT FROM PHL.

Narrative: AFTER TKOF AND AT APPROX 1000' AGL, #3 ENG FAILED. WE CONTINUED ACCELERATION AND RAISED FLAPS TO 0. F/O WAS FLYING. THE F/O MOVED THE #3 THRUST LEVER TO IDLE AND #3 START SWITCH TO CUT-OFF AS I MONITORED. SECOND THE ENG AS PER SOP TALKED TO DISPATCH TO DETERMINE WHERE THEY WANTED THE ACFT, THEY REQUESTED US TO DIVERT TO SDF. WX AT SDF WAS CLR 7 71/56 0000 30.12, RECEIVED NEW CLRNC TO DIVERT TO SDF WITH AN ALTERNATE OF IND. WX WAS GOOD BOTH PLACES. I FELT IT WAS EQUALLY AS SAFE TO GO TO SDF AS TO RETURN TO PHL (FLT TIME WAS ABOUT 1 PLUS 10 REMAINING AT THAT POINT). IT WAS NECESSARY TO DUMP FUEL PRIOR TO LNDG DUE TO APPROX 25000 LBS OVER MAX LNDG WT, ZID REQUESTED WE DUMP AT APPROX 70 DME NE OF THE IIU VOR ON 060 DEG R AT FL190. WE DUMPED DOWN TO MAX LNDG WT AND PROCEEDED TO UNEVENTFUL LNDG. NOTE: YOU MAY BE WONDERING WHY I AM FILING THIS RPT AS NOTHING PARTICULARLY UNUSUAL OCCURRED. THE LCL FAA OFFICE CALLED OUR CHIEF PLT OFFICE AND REQUESTED THAT FAA FORM 8020-5 (ACFT INCIDENT RPT) BE SUBMITTED. THEREFORE I HAVE ELECTED TO SUBMIT THIS RPT.
