Narrative:

Landing at cgx (meigs) cleared for 31 ILS at midway until VFR conditions reached, then to meigs. At 2500' broke out and turned toward meigs. Controller said, 'what are your intentions?' pilot: 'proceeding to meigs.' controller' 'you do not have that option--proceed on ILS to mdw or cancel.' pilot: 'ok, I cancel, squawking 1200.' controller: 'received, cleared to meigs tower.' problem: I assumed I would get/or was getting a visibility approach to meigs with en route squawk (code) since I was 8-9 mi from meigs. I thought approach would want to continue my code and flight follow for traffic until I was close to meigs. No other aircraft involved, no conflict, no problem, just a communication misunderstanding.
