Narrative:

We were cleared from clt to grr via the hornet 1 SID and the stann vector gate, then direct hmv VOR as filed (this was direct grr). We were vectored to, and we intercepted, the clt 347 degree right. We flew the 347 degree right to the 50 mi fix. In the absence of any other guidance, such as an expect clearance, we went direct hmv. ZTL advised us after about 10 mi that we should have stayed no the 347 degree right until we were vectored or given other clearance. I have included a copy of the SID and have highlighted where the misunderstanding could have occurred. The center controller was very nice in his advisory and I do not believe a traffic conflict arose. I still believe this departure leaves room for interpretation and confusion.
