Narrative:

Called ames unicom at about 8 mi out for winds and active. No response. Called ames again at about 3 mi out and was told by female that winds were 21-27, use 31. Made landing pass for 31 and saw my ground speed was way too fast as to my airspeed. Called again and was told to use 19--no, 13. Made pass on 19 and it felt right. Also looked at wind sock which showed wind to be between 19 and 13. Landed on 19. Speed was at about 30-35 when I was hit with a strong gust of wind, blowing me off to the right onto grass. I came to a 3-4' deep ravine. Tried to hop the ravine, causing aircraft to skid on nose to stop about 20'. If the ravine between the runway and taxiway was filled, no accident would have occurred.

Title: GA SMA RWY EXCURSION LNDG IN A CROSSWIND.

Narrative: CALLED AMES UNICOM AT ABOUT 8 MI OUT FOR WINDS AND ACTIVE. NO RESPONSE. CALLED AMES AGAIN AT ABOUT 3 MI OUT AND WAS TOLD BY FEMALE THAT WINDS WERE 21-27, USE 31. MADE LNDG PASS FOR 31 AND SAW MY GND SPD WAS WAY TOO FAST AS TO MY AIRSPD. CALLED AGAIN AND WAS TOLD TO USE 19--NO, 13. MADE PASS ON 19 AND IT FELT RIGHT. ALSO LOOKED AT WIND SOCK WHICH SHOWED WIND TO BE BTWN 19 AND 13. LANDED ON 19. SPD WAS AT ABOUT 30-35 WHEN I WAS HIT WITH A STRONG GUST OF WIND, BLOWING ME OFF TO THE RIGHT ONTO GRASS. I CAME TO A 3-4' DEEP RAVINE. TRIED TO HOP THE RAVINE, CAUSING ACFT TO SKID ON NOSE TO STOP ABOUT 20'. IF THE RAVINE BTWN THE RWY AND TXWY WAS FILLED, NO ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE OCCURRED.
