Narrative:

We were cleared sjc loupe 7 departure, linden transition, and loaded the loupe 7 departure in the FMC. The map mode depicted a racetrack course proceeded from runway 30L with a right turn at the 1.8 DME to a 120 degree heading to the 047 degree right at or below 5000', continuing southeast, and then looping to the right, crossing the sjc VOR at 12000', then outbnd on the 339 degree right to dyblo. The CDU legs page showed connecting fix segments west/O a vector. We checked the chart 10-3A page for departure confirmation, but were interrupted during this activity by a SELCAL from dispatch. We took off using the HSI map mode and flew the racetrack course as depicted, using VNAV and heading select modes. We had been cleared to FL230, but crossed the sjc 047 degree right on a 120 degree heading at 5000'. We then resumed our climb toward 12000', following the HSI map. At 3.9 DME south of the VOR bay departure called to give us a left 90 degree turn, followed by a left 270 degree turn, because they were concerned we would not make the sjc 12000' crossing restriction. We believe we would have made the restriction, but immediately complied with their instructions. We leveled off well before reaching the VOR and were handed off to ZOA. They gave us an 010 degree vector to lin and climb clearance to FL230. In reviewing the 10-3A loupe 7 departure, we realized that the map mode his presentation depicting a racetrack course continuously from takeoff to the sjc VOR was in error.

Title: FMC MAP IN COCKPIT INDICATED DIRECT BACK TO THE VOR CROSSING AT 12000'. DEP CTLR INTERVENED, GAVE VECTORS TO GET FLT BACK ON THE SID.

Narrative: WE WERE CLRED SJC LOUPE 7 DEP, LINDEN TRANSITION, AND LOADED THE LOUPE 7 DEP IN THE FMC. THE MAP MODE DEPICTED A RACETRACK COURSE PROCEEDED FROM RWY 30L WITH A RIGHT TURN AT THE 1.8 DME TO A 120 DEG HDG TO THE 047 DEG R AT OR BELOW 5000', CONTINUING SE, AND THEN LOOPING TO THE RIGHT, XING THE SJC VOR AT 12000', THEN OUTBND ON THE 339 DEG R TO DYBLO. THE CDU LEGS PAGE SHOWED CONNECTING FIX SEGMENTS W/O A VECTOR. WE CHKED THE CHART 10-3A PAGE FOR DEP CONFIRMATION, BUT WERE INTERRUPTED DURING THIS ACTIVITY BY A SELCAL FROM DISPATCH. WE TOOK OFF USING THE HSI MAP MODE AND FLEW THE RACETRACK COURSE AS DEPICTED, USING VNAV AND HDG SELECT MODES. WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO FL230, BUT CROSSED THE SJC 047 DEG R ON A 120 DEG HDG AT 5000'. WE THEN RESUMED OUR CLB TOWARD 12000', FOLLOWING THE HSI MAP. AT 3.9 DME S OF THE VOR BAY DEP CALLED TO GIVE US A LEFT 90 DEG TURN, FOLLOWED BY A LEFT 270 DEG TURN, BECAUSE THEY WERE CONCERNED WE WOULD NOT MAKE THE SJC 12000' XING RESTRICTION. WE BELIEVE WE WOULD HAVE MADE THE RESTRICTION, BUT IMMEDIATELY COMPLIED WITH THEIR INSTRUCTIONS. WE LEVELED OFF WELL BEFORE REACHING THE VOR AND WERE HANDED OFF TO ZOA. THEY GAVE US AN 010 DEG VECTOR TO LIN AND CLB CLRNC TO FL230. IN REVIEWING THE 10-3A LOUPE 7 DEP, WE REALIZED THAT THE MAP MODE HIS PRESENTATION DEPICTING A RACETRACK COURSE CONTINUOUSLY FROM TKOF TO THE SJC VOR WAS IN ERROR.
