Narrative:

Climbing thru 16;000 ft the engine driven hydraulic pump number 1 fail EICAS (blue/cyan) message appeared. We completed the non-normal procedure per company policy and noticed the number 1 hydraulic quantity decreasing. At this time we decided to return to [departure airport]. We notified ATC; company; flight attendants and passengers. With the hydraulic quantity decreasing we [advised ATC]. While preparing to return the number 1 hydraulic quantity low (blue/cyan) message appeared. Again we completed the non-normal per company procedures. Landing weight showed 97;400 so we performed an overweight landing per QRH/company procedures. After landing we determined we could safely exit the runway and then had crash fire rescue equipment look us over. It was determined we were ok to taxi to the gate. After parking at the gate an entry for both the hydraulic problem and overweight landing was entered in the logbook.
