Narrative:

On the lfd transition to the VOR 28 approach marshall, I tracked to lfd VOR on V233 from lan VOR. The controller asked if I was going to do a 'procedure turn' at the lfd VOR with which I responded 'affirm'. After the course reversal to get established on the transition course the controller proceeded to chew me out for doing an unauthorized 'procedure turn'. I was cleared for the full approach and I had indicated that we would be using the lfd VOR transition. The problem was the misuse and terms. The term procedure turn should have been replaced by a course reversal and I should have emphasized the fact that I was doing the lfd transition.

Title: SMA PLT ON INSTRUMENT TRANSITION AT 5D8 IS CHASTISED BY APCH CTLR FOR EXECUTING SOME TYPE OF COURSE REVERSAL OR 'PROC TURN' OVER LFD.

Narrative: ON THE LFD TRANSITION TO THE VOR 28 APCH MARSHALL, I TRACKED TO LFD VOR ON V233 FROM LAN VOR. THE CTLR ASKED IF I WAS GOING TO DO A 'PROC TURN' AT THE LFD VOR WITH WHICH I RESPONDED 'AFFIRM'. AFTER THE COURSE REVERSAL TO GET ESTABLISHED ON THE TRANSITION COURSE THE CTLR PROCEEDED TO CHEW ME OUT FOR DOING AN UNAUTHORIZED 'PROC TURN'. I WAS CLRED FOR THE FULL APCH AND I HAD INDICATED THAT WE WOULD BE USING THE LFD VOR TRANSITION. THE PROBLEM WAS THE MISUSE AND TERMS. THE TERM PROC TURN SHOULD HAVE BEEN REPLACED BY A COURSE REVERSAL AND I SHOULD HAVE EMPHASIZED THE FACT THAT I WAS DOING THE LFD TRANSITION.
