Narrative:

Flight attendant (flight attendant) informed us that they were fighting an electronic cigarette fire (sparking). We were 50 miles north of [a suitable alternate]; so we diverted [there]. We put on our O2 masks and established communication. We completed all checklists. I told tower to pass along to aircraft rescue and fire fighting (arff) [where] we would be stopping. At this time the fire (sparking) was out. We stopped and told the passengers to remain seated. Arff asked us to drop the aft stairs. We were unable and they did not know how to drop the stairs; so we proceeded to the gate where arff responded and confirmed that the fire was out.two batteries carried in a fabric pouch the size of a sun glass case touching each other. It is possible that they shorted or a contact made between the batteries.
