Narrative:

There have been several events where I received calls from technicians reporting they received the wrong ship main battery for a 'discard of main batteries' task. In previous events another battery was ordered or task unassigned. Tonight I received an all too familiar call from [a] technician working [on aircraft X]; asking for shipping info of the battery for a discard task. He reported he had a large battery part number 7638-36 just delivered but; task calls for a smaller forward battery; part number 7639-34 needed for replacement. The phenom has a forward and aft battery. The aft battery is larger as it is used for engine starts and front battery is smaller. I checked the part ordered for the task and found the correct battery ordered to the plane 3x with different delivery times. It appeared the designated battery sent to complete this task is part number 7639-36 but tech reported it to be too large for a forward battery. I checked maintenance tracking system; and found 3 battery part numbers listed for the same configuration slot and part group and as alternate parts for each other; part number 7639-34; part number 7638-36; and part number 7638-48P for emb-505. Yes; we are to identify with EMB505P but it is not easily distinguishable when listed in [our maintenance tracking system.]a check of the illustrated parts catalog (ipc) shows part number 7639-34 only eligible battery for the forward position. Part number 7638-36 (pre service bulletin (sb) 505-24-0015) and part number 7638-48P (post sb 505-24-0015) eligible batteries for aft location. Changing a -36 and -48P on the aircraft during the service bulletin requires a weight and balance change. The batteries cannot be interchanged with each other without weight and balance changes per service bulletin (sb) instructions.I checked with materials coordinator. His screen showed me a list of many times when they sent -36 batteries when -34 was requested. To them the batteries are alternate parts for each other. Likely the source of much confusion in the field and with [maintenance control] when trying to accomplish discard task. A check of EMB505 in [our maintenance tracking system] shows full fleet compliance. To me this indicates [the company] should not own a -36 battery for use in the phenom fleet.in [our maintenance system]; part number 7639-34 has an attachment labeled verify tracking. It is an email and does not contain acceptable data under return to service (rts) list of acceptable data to show it is eligible for fleet but; shows approved aircraft inspection program (aaip) required tracking for each battery part number.part number 7638-48P has two attachments. One; an email showing part number 7639-34 in ipc 24-36-01. It contains no indication it has an alternate for -48P. Not sure why it is attached to part number 7638-48P. The other attachment is the same attachment that is found on part number 7639-34 for tracking purpose.[suggest] remove batteries from being alternates of each other in [our maintenance system] even for emb-505 to avoid confusion. Change tracking item wording for each battery to identify forward or aft battery and remove the word 'batteries'. Currently the task is used for each battery tracking but is plural (confusing) and should state fwd or aft discard of main batteries. Yes; secondary information identifies which battery but that is not an excuse for incorrect grammar promoting misunderstandings. Discard of aft main battery or discard of fwd main battery is acceptable. Remove all part number 7638-36 batteries from [our supplier]. Add 'do not use' or 'pre-SB505-24-0015' to part number 7638-36 in [our maintenance system].remove assembly emb-505 from [our maintenance system]. So it is not visible when reviewing part numbers unless there is some reason it affects regulatory required tracking if it was used as a designator previously and the data cannot be moved over to AEMB505P.

Title: A Maintenance Inspector reported that batteries listed in the Illustrated Parts Catalog for Embraer EMB-505 have various part numbers and was unclear as to which battery is to be used in each location.
