Narrative:

While at the gate in [an] A319 basic aircraft we noticed that with the terr pb (push button) selected; no terr was displayed on the nd (navigational display). Then while enroute to lax there were no terr indications while flying over the mountainous; western us (rocky mtns; las vegas area; RIIVR3 arrival over big bear ca and the ILS 24R at lax). We were unable to find any description of a basic aircraft terr display in [the operation manual]. This was the third airplane we flew during this sequence with the same indications (no terr displayed on the nd with the terr on pb selected on). We tried various setting of screen brightness to no avail. The lack of indications were present in flight and at the gate.
