Narrative:

[We] received takeoff clearance. The first officer applied thrust ensuring symmetrical thrust then set thrust to the takeoff position. As the aircraft accelerated through approximately 65kt an EICAS caution illuminated displaying 'spoiler fail.' upon seeing this the captain then looked down and saw that the spoilers were deployed and called for the takeoff to be aborted and took control of the aircraft and performed the abort. The first officer notified the tower and [we] received clearance to taxi back to the gate. As the aircraft was at a safe taxi speed and exiting the runway; the EICAS caution message cleared and the spoilers indicated closed. The flight attendant and passengers were notified of the situation and the flight returned to the gate; deplaned and then notified dispatch and maintenance.this event was detected when the EICAS caution displayed and the captain made the decision to abort the takeoff. This event occurred because the aircraft sensed that it was in the landing phase even though the aircraft was accelerating with the thrust levers in the takeoff position.
