Narrative:

During initial climb out from pwm, with initial clearance to 3000' followed by clearance to 10000', climbing through approximately 2900' departure control (119.75) advised us of an aircraft at 10-11 O'clock and told us to level at 3000' (we were cleared to 10000'). Aircraft was approximately 1/2 mi, nebnd, closing rapidly, when we first saw the small light twin engine aircraft. We were level (from maximum climb rate) by 3300'. Sep appeared to be less than 500' vertical and horizontal. FAA inspector (based at pwm) was aboard jump seat and confirms all above.
