Narrative:

Traffic on colorado springs tower was heavy. They were controling numerous light aircraft as we waited for takeoff. Two military jets landed and a light aircraft go around were accomplished in the space of a few mins. As we were cleared for takeoff, two light aircraft were on the departure, one instructed to turn left, the other right. As we were cleared for takeoff, the tower cleared an aircraft behind us into position on the runway. There was no conversation with or mention of any incoming traffic from the north on tower frequency. On our takeoff leg, I observed an aircraft directly ahead about 5 mi and flying directly at us. We had been cleared to 9000' and to fly runway heading. As it became apparent the oncoming aircraft was making an approach to runway 17 (a head on approach with departing traffic) we turned right and climbed to approximately 9400' to avoid a collision. We advised the tower of our action and he switched us to departure control. There was no mention of the conflicting traffic, by the tower. I'm convinced the tower was unaware of his presence. The conflicting traffic was a scheduled air carrier, medium large transport. If approach control knew of the southbound traffic, the tower should have been aware also. There was a complete breakdown in communication. With traffic at the airport as heavy as it was, what was a scheduled air carrier doing landing opp the direction of traffic?!

Title: A DEP ACR TOOK EVASIVE ACTION TO AVOID AN OPPOSITE DIRECTION ACR ARR.

Narrative: TFC ON COLORADO SPRINGS TWR WAS HEAVY. THEY WERE CTLING NUMEROUS LIGHT ACFT AS WE WAITED FOR TKOF. TWO MIL JETS LANDED AND A LIGHT ACFT GO AROUND WERE ACCOMPLISHED IN THE SPACE OF A FEW MINS. AS WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF, TWO LIGHT ACFT WERE ON THE DEP, ONE INSTRUCTED TO TURN L, THE OTHER R. AS WE WERE CLRED FOR TKOF, THE TWR CLRED AN ACFT BEHIND US INTO POS ON THE RWY. THERE WAS NO CONVERSATION WITH OR MENTION OF ANY INCOMING TFC FROM THE N ON TWR FREQ. ON OUR TKOF LEG, I OBSERVED AN ACFT DIRECTLY AHEAD ABOUT 5 MI AND FLYING DIRECTLY AT US. WE HAD BEEN CLRED TO 9000' AND TO FLY RWY HDG. AS IT BECAME APPARENT THE ONCOMING ACFT WAS MAKING AN APCH TO RWY 17 (A HEAD ON APCH WITH DEPARTING TFC) WE TURNED R AND CLBED TO APPROX 9400' TO AVOID A COLLISION. WE ADVISED THE TWR OF OUR ACTION AND HE SWITCHED US TO DEP CTL. THERE WAS NO MENTION OF THE CONFLICTING TFC, BY THE TWR. I'M CONVINCED THE TWR WAS UNAWARE OF HIS PRESENCE. THE CONFLICTING TFC WAS A SCHEDULED AIR CARRIER, MLG. IF APCH CTL KNEW OF THE SBND TFC, THE TWR SHOULD HAVE BEEN AWARE ALSO. THERE WAS A COMPLETE BREAKDOWN IN COM. WITH TFC AT THE ARPT AS HEAVY AS IT WAS, WHAT WAS A SCHEDULED AIR CARRIER DOING LNDG OPP THE DIRECTION OF TFC?!
