Narrative:

I received ATIS and contacted tower at 9 mi DME. Was assigned left base to runway 14. There were 3 other aircraft in the pattern, all right base or downwind for 14. Reported in at turn to base, and reported in error 'right base.' called tower to correct position as 'left base.' tower requested left turn for runway 19. I complied, but was high. Tower requested 'land to hold short of 14.' I replied, 'no problem.' at flare I felt something was not right. At scraping metal T/D I knew what! There was nothing left to do but slide, shut down and wait for the equipment. Damage, except to propeller and engine, was minimal, owing to numerous antenna on the below of the aircraft. No gear warning was heard; as of this report there has been no examination to determine why. How could this happen after 10 yrs of flying this aircraft and countless lndgs? In a word, 'distraction.' 1) I was flying to my restaurant in wilmington where my manager had recently suffered a heart attack (3 days earlier). I had been evaluating my options for management on the flight down. 2) I began my landing checklist as I turned base. Fuel pump was on, mixture too rich, propellers to 2500--why not the gear? I don't know. Looking for traffic, trying to break into ATC to report, I just didn't finish the most important step. 3) after being reassigned to runway 19 I was relieved to be going away from traffic on 14 I had been unable to locate visually. I need 2 steep turns to roll out on final. Why no final gumps check as is my habit on short, I don't know. Maybe overconfidence or complacency over the #'south that final check is always behind me. Maybe I just assumed I had done it. The flare did not feel right, but it was too late.

Title: SMA PLT DISTR BY RWY CHANGE AND PERSONAL FACTORS LANDS GEAR UP.

Narrative: I RECEIVED ATIS AND CONTACTED TWR AT 9 MI DME. WAS ASSIGNED LEFT BASE TO RWY 14. THERE WERE 3 OTHER ACFT IN THE PATTERN, ALL RIGHT BASE OR DOWNWIND FOR 14. RPTED IN AT TURN TO BASE, AND RPTED IN ERROR 'RIGHT BASE.' CALLED TWR TO CORRECT POS AS 'LEFT BASE.' TWR REQUESTED LEFT TURN FOR RWY 19. I COMPLIED, BUT WAS HIGH. TWR REQUESTED 'LAND TO HOLD SHORT OF 14.' I REPLIED, 'NO PROB.' AT FLARE I FELT SOMETHING WAS NOT RIGHT. AT SCRAPING METAL T/D I KNEW WHAT! THERE WAS NOTHING LEFT TO DO BUT SLIDE, SHUT DOWN AND WAIT FOR THE EQUIP. DAMAGE, EXCEPT TO PROP AND ENG, WAS MINIMAL, OWING TO NUMEROUS ANTENNA ON THE BELOW OF THE ACFT. NO GEAR WARNING WAS HEARD; AS OF THIS RPT THERE HAS BEEN NO EXAMINATION TO DETERMINE WHY. HOW COULD THIS HAPPEN AFTER 10 YRS OF FLYING THIS ACFT AND COUNTLESS LNDGS? IN A WORD, 'DISTR.' 1) I WAS FLYING TO MY RESTAURANT IN WILMINGTON WHERE MY MGR HAD RECENTLY SUFFERED A HEART ATTACK (3 DAYS EARLIER). I HAD BEEN EVALUATING MY OPTIONS FOR MGMNT ON THE FLT DOWN. 2) I BEGAN MY LNDG CHKLIST AS I TURNED BASE. FUEL PUMP WAS ON, MIXTURE TOO RICH, PROPS TO 2500--WHY NOT THE GEAR? I DON'T KNOW. LOOKING FOR TFC, TRYING TO BREAK INTO ATC TO RPT, I JUST DIDN'T FINISH THE MOST IMPORTANT STEP. 3) AFTER BEING REASSIGNED TO RWY 19 I WAS RELIEVED TO BE GOING AWAY FROM TFC ON 14 I HAD BEEN UNABLE TO LOCATE VISUALLY. I NEED 2 STEEP TURNS TO ROLL OUT ON FINAL. WHY NO FINAL GUMPS CHK AS IS MY HABIT ON SHORT, I DON'T KNOW. MAYBE OVERCONFIDENCE OR COMPLACENCY OVER THE #'S THAT FINAL CHK IS ALWAYS BEHIND ME. MAYBE I JUST ASSUMED I HAD DONE IT. THE FLARE DID NOT FEEL RIGHT, BUT IT WAS TOO LATE.
