Narrative:

I was the captain on [the] flight approaching gate in clt. After receiving a clearance into gate; I taxied the aircraft toward the gate area and stopped just short of the protected parking area while the automated parking sensed our position and indicated clearance into the protected area. There were several ramp vehicles holding behind the 757 aircraft parked at the adjacent gate. After receiving clearance by the automated parking system; the catering truck that serviced the adjacent 757 drove directly in front of my aircraft from right to left while my plane was taxiing into the gate. My focus was directed on the automated parking system. A verbal warning came from the crew and I immediately stopped the aircraft. The truck moved perpendicular to my path taking no evasive action by stopping; slowing or altering the course away from my aircraft. The automated parking system commanded a stop as the vehicle passed across the center parking line extremely close to the nose of my aircraft.I verbally reported the incident to the clt ramp tower who immediately pulled up and viewed the video tapes. [They] assured me that [they] would follow up on the matter and make the proper notifications.the was a result of complete disregard on the part of the vehicle driver to safely operate his vehicle in close proximity to a aircraft moving with jet engines running. It was a wanton and willful disregard for safety while he intentionally drove his truck in the path of an aircraft parking in a protected gate area. The driver acted with gross negligence in his responsibilities placing over 200 people danger of serious injury or death.
