Narrative:

We were given numerous step climbs and radar vectors and then finally joined the arrival. During this time; I was the pilot monitoring and busy getting ATIS and doing performance. We were at FL260 and were cleared to FL290. I read it back and PF (pilot flying) put it in altitude selector. I went back to performance; then a couple minutes later ATC told us to maintain FL260 and gave us another heading. We both realized aircraft had not climbed at that point.better monitoring. Making sure aircraft does what we want it too.

Title: B737 Captain reported being cleared to climb to FL290 from FL260 and the flying First Officer entered 260 into the MCP but failed to engage a climb mode.
